The number of lessons you will need depends upon your needs and desires, your general condition, and your willingness to apply what you learn in the lessons. For students new to the Technique it is highly recommended to take two lessons per week for a five-week period in order to establish a firm foundation in the principles and application of the work. After about ten lessons most students have a fairly clear idea of how the Technique can help them, and usually notice improvement in their use and condition. Many students continue to take one lesson per week as part of a routine for maintaining health and wellbeing. Other students find that their needs are met after a series of ten lessons.
By using a gentle touch, along with clear verbal directions, I help you become aware of habitual movement patterns that interfere with your natural balance and coordination. Through this awareness, you learn to prevent these interfering patterns while being gently guided to discover freer, more natural movement.
During the approximately one-hour lesson, I will work with you in everyday activities such as sitting, standing, walking, breathing, speaking, simple bending and reaching. It is important to address these activities, as the habits you cultivate in them significantly impact how you function in everything that you do. If you are a musician, part of each lesson will be devoted to working with you as you play or instrument, aiming you towards a lighter, less strenuous and more efficient way to make music. The end of each lesson is usually devoted to the restorative aspects of the work, sometimes referred to as "constructive rest". This takes place while you lie down on a bodywork table as I employ gentle, guided movement and directed thinking. I’ll also give suggestions and strategies on how to apply what you’ve learned and how to take care of yourself outside of the lessons, helping you to function better in whatever activities you’re performing.
It is best to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing to your lessons. Jeans or skirts are not recommended (you will spend part of your lesson lying down on a body-work table). You will be asked to remove your shoes, as the work is most effectively experienced in bare or stocking feet.
The Alexander Technique is not a form of medical treatment, manipulation or exercise. Rather, it is a form of education that involves the gentle, guiding touch of the teacher and the conscious awareness of the student. You will not be put into any unnatural or unsafe postures, nor led into any unsafe or unnatural movements. Your safety, sense of security and ease are of topmost importance.
Since there are no exercises in the Alexander Technique, you will not be required to do any exercises between lessons. The Alexander Technique embodies a set of principles that you can apply to all activities of life. Therefore, you will be encouraged to apply these principles from the first lesson, so that you can begin to take responsibility for your own improvement. You will also be taught a procedure called "constructive rest", which is a very pleasant way of improving your consciousness, as well as restoring the resting length of the muscles in your body.
If you need to cancel a lesson, I ask that you give me notice at least 24 hours in advance of your scheduled appointment. You will be charged for any missed lessons with less than a 24-hour notice. Medical and serious family emergencies are the exception to this rule.
I am certified as a teacher of the Alexander Technique by the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT), which is the governing board of standards, training and practices here in the United States. I have completed over 1600 hours of formal training (over three years) at a school recognized by AmSAT. I have a wide background of experience teaching the Alexander Technique, movement studies, functional anatomy and fitness to people of all ages and backgrounds. Besides having post graduate training as an Alexander Technique teacher, I am constantly expanding and updating my skills and knowledge in the studies of anatomy, physiology, neurobiology, and exercise and movement science. As a musician with over 35 years of professional performance experience, I have developed a way to effectively address virtually any pedagogical problem by applying the Alexander principles.
